For millennia honey represented the only form of sweetener available and it was much appreciated by the Sumerians and Babylonians both as a food and as a basic ingredient of body lotions and clay.
Initially it was collected from hives and stored in special vessels. The birth of Bee Keeping in order to obtain honey dates back to the Egyptians. Many hieroglyphics and documents found illustrate large laboratories that processed honey and bees’ wax and boats that transported the hives along the Nile.
Later ancient Greeks specialised in bee keeping as honey was considered the “Nectar of the Gods”. Romans as well made consumption of great quantities of honey and their demand was such that imports from Greece, Spain and Malta became necessary
